US Mint 1815 Major General Andrew Jackson Battle of New Orleans 2 1/2" Medal Furst. F. RESTRIKE
Very scarce US Mint made medal. Stunning detail.
The Battle of New Orleans was a major military engagement fought between the United States and Great Britain during the War of 1812. The battle took place on January 8, 1815, just weeks after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed, which ended the war. Despite this, both sides fought fiercely for control of the strategically important port of New Orleans (word traveled slow in those days, it took weeks & even months for messages to be communicated). Under the leadership of General Andrew Jackson, the American forces managed to repel a much larger British force, inflicting heavy casualties and winning a decisive victory. The battle became a symbol of American military prowess and boosted the morale of the young nation. Today, it is remembered as one of the most significant events in American military history.
