1882-CC Morgan Silver Dollar in original GSA Black Display Box and Slab with COA
The 1882-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is a highly popular and collectible vintage coin minted at the historic Carson City Mint in Nevada. It carries a low overall mintage of 1,133,000 coins, accounting for roughly 2% of all Morgan dollars ever produced. Despite this relatively low production, beautiful Mint State (uncirculated) examples are readily available today because over half of the entire mintage remained secured in U.S. Treasury vaults for decades until they were sold via the General Services Administration (GSA) hoard auctions in the 1970s and 1980s.
History of the 1882-CC
During the late 19th century, the Carson City Mint struck significantly fewer coins than larger facilities like Philadelphia or New Orleans. Because these coins were used to back silver certificates, millions sat undisturbed in U.S. Treasury vaults until they were released to the public through the General Services Administration (GSA) sales in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Coins still residing in their original black GSA holders carry a premium among collectors.
